Theory Test

You can take your theory test any time after your 17th birthday, provided you have a valid provisional licence. You must pass your theory test before you can take your practical driving test. Most pupils will take their theory test once they have started to have professional driving lessons. Way2Pass can advise when to take your theory test – this will depend on how soon you will be ready for your practical test. The theory test consists of two parts, a multiple choice section and a hazard awareness section. You will need to pass both parts of the theory test at the same sitting to obtain your theory test pass certificate.

Theory Test - Multiple Choice Section
You will be given 50 multiple choice questions and you must get at least 43 of them correct in order to pass. It’s all done on a computer screen. The system is easy to use and you even have the option of a fifteen minute practice session before the real test begins.

Theory Test - Hazard Perception Test
consists of fourteen movie clips which are each about a minute long. Thirteen of the clips contain one developing hazard and one of the clips contains two, so there are fifteen hazards to spot in total.
There is a sliding scale of points to be earned depending on how soon you spot each hazard. If you recognise the hazard as soon as it appears you can score a maximum of five points; if you see it later you’ll score fewer points. You need to score at least 44 out of a possible 75 in order to pass.
More information available on the DSA website.

The complete set of theory test questions and answers is available in book and CD-ROM format.
For the Hazard Perception test there is a DVD available known as ‘The official guide to hazard perception'. You can use both of of these if you have a computer and this is the best way to practice.
Also useful are the books ‘The Official DSA Theory Test for Car Drivers’ and ‘The Official Highway Code’ which are useful whenever you have a spare 15 minutes.
