GETTING STARTED

 

 

You can start learning to drive when you are 17.

First you will need to apply for a Provisional Driving licence which you can do 3 months before your 17 th birthday.
You can apply online – visit DirectGov . Or you can obtain the form D1 from your local Post Office. (Allow about 3 weeks for your application to be processed) so start early!

Eyesight Requirements

You must be able to read the new style number plates from a distance of 20 metres (66 feet). If you need to wear glasses (or contact lenses) you must wear them at all times whilst driving. For more information - click here

Driving in Great Britain on a Foreign Licence

If you are a visitor, resident or student in Great Britain (GB) and still have a driving licence issued in the country you have come from, there are certain conditions that affect how long you can drive, and what you can drive in Great Britain. How many lessons will I need?

This will depend on your experience (eg ride a motor bike), ability and any extra practice. The DSA suggests the average is about 43 hours of tuition with extra practice. But you may only need 20 hours or more.
